HOW TO MANAGE BACK–PAIN

No doubt preventive aspects of back pains are very important factorin order to manage the different back pains. There would be very few back problems if people will keep their trunk muscles in optimal conditions by regular exercise such as swimming, cycling, brisk walking or jogging. Morning is the ideal because back of the older people tends to stiffen during evening because of their inactivity. Risk factors like sleeping with back hyper extended, sitting for long time on overstuffed chairs, badly designed auto seats plays important role. It is estimated that pressure between disks is increased by 200 % on changing from recumbent to standing posture and by 400% by sitting slumped in any easy chair. Correct sitting posture lessens this.

Lifting heavy weight from a position of flexed trunk such as lifting suitcase or trunk from car is always dangerous. Always lift with object close to body.

Long trips in car or plane without changing posture put maximum strain on disk and ligamentous structures. One should avoid long sittings on computers also

Sudden strenuous exercise without conditioning or warm ups also is likely to cause trouble to disk and their ligamentous structures Muscular and ligamentous strains and minor disk lesions are self-limiting and respond to simple measures in short period of time.

Basic principal of therapy is rest in a recumbent position for several days to weeks. When weight bearing is resumed a light lumbosacral support and immobilisation of the part plays important role in gaining fully restoration.

Physical measures such as heat, cold diathermy or massage are of limiting value but active exercises are very important to reduce the spasm and improve muscle tone.

Long bed rest is very important in the treatment of acute or chronic rupture of lumber disc.
